EXILVA AS AN UPTAKE ENHANCER - TESTED IN FIELD TRIALS

Exilva is a completely natural and infinitely sustainable microfibrillated cellulose that improves the uptake of herbicides, as well as enhances structure in your product formulations. Exilva increases your formulation efficiency, reduces your CO2 footprint and creates exciting opportunities for innovation.

Adjuvants are often used with herbicide to ensure a sufficient weed control in all conditions. Greenhouse testing has shown that Exilva microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) can act as an adjuvant for herbicides (more information here). Exilva was further tested in the field trials to ensure that it works also in realistic environmental conditions. The tests were performed on corn fields in Iowa (US) by Professor Micheal Owen’s group at Iowa State University. Two commercial herbicide products were used: Roundup Powermax from Monsanto and Liberty 280 from Bayer CropScience.

Figure 1 shows how Exilva can boost the effect of Roundup Powermax (active ingredient: glyphosate) against four common weeds. Roundup Powermax was used at sub-optimal dosage to leave room for the effect of Exilva. The weed control was better when Roundup Powermax was used with Exilva than when it was used alone. Especially, the amount of common cocklebur was clearly lower in the test plots where Exilva was used.

Exilva was also tested with another herbicide product, Liberty 280 (active ingredient: glufosinate) and the results are presented in Figure 2. Exilva improved the effect of this herbicide product when Liberty 280 was used at reduced dosage.

Figure 3 presents pictures from the trials field. The first picture (A) is from a plot treated with Roundup Powermax at reduced rate. The reduced rate is not sufficient to control the weeds which are growing between the corn rows. The second picture (B) shows a plot treated with same amount of Roundup Powermax together with 0.02% Exilva as an adjuvant. The amount of weeds between the corn rows is reduced significantly. No harm to the crops was observed in any of the experiments.

Conclusions

Exilva, Borregaard’s microfibrillated cellulose, enhances the uptake of the herbicide products containing glyphosate or glufosinate as the active ingredient. This has been demonstrated earlier in greenhouse testing and now also in field trials. The results above show that it can be used in efficient adjuvant formulations. Moreover, it is a green and safe-to-use alternative to existing adjuvant technologies.
